Electricity generation with organic rankine cycle (ORC) in low temperature geothermal field and modelling of Afyon Geothermal Electric Production CO.

As a renewable and sustainable energy source geothermal energy is a reliable energy source for a number of fortunate countries in terms of geothermal energy such as Turkey. Furthermore it is cheap, clean, environmentally friendly and one of the most important features give rise to emissions close to zero. Although geothermal energy potential of Turkey is one of the highest countries in the world, unfortunately, only small part of this endless geothermal potential can be assessed. Increasing the utilization of the geothermal potential will be possible through the use of innovative approaches which are exploiting the geothermal energy at low temperatures. Afyon region is located in the concept of low-temperature field specified in geological terms. Therefore, in this work first attempts of electric power generation at Afyon Geothermal Power Plant with the ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) system design have been examined in terms of efficiency and electricity generation. System operation parameters have been entered into the simulation created with the SCADA software. The changes in efficiency have been calculated according to the variations of system parameters. With the establishment of the system model, it will be easier to detect the operating regions where the system becomes unstable and recognize the areas where overall efficiency of the system is negative.
