Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the expression of emotion of patients with substance use disorder and their primary caregivers, the remission period of the patients and the caregiver burden of care. The research is a prospective, descriptive, and relation-seeking study. The research was carried out with 55 patients who met the research criteria and their first-degree caregivers among 90 patients who were hospitalized in Bolu İzzet Baysal Mental Health and Diseases Hospital Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment and Research Center between July 1 and December 31, 2021. In the collection of data; introductory information form for patients, Level of Expressed Emotion Scale; Introductory information form including perceived social support level for caregivers, Expression of Emotion Scale and Zarit Care Burden Scale were used. To determine the duration of remission, 3 months after discharge from the hospital, patients were contacted by phone and asked about their substance use status. It was determined that the mean remission period of the patients was 53.36±37.90 (2-90) days, and the relapse rate was 58.2%. No correlation was found between the duration of remission and the patients' emotional expression (p>0.05). A negative correlation was found between the duration of remission and the caregivers' total emotional expression score (r=-.30; p<0.05) and the over-attention-protective-caring subscale score (r=-.38; p<0.001). It was determined that this subscale explained 11% of the change in patients' remission duration (F=3.284, p=0.03, R=.40, R2 = .16, Adjusted R2 = .11). The caregivers' duration of care was 4.31±2.28 (2-10) years, the mean care burden score was 72.53±13.71 (41-91), and their perceived social support level was 3.91±4.24 (0-10). A positive correlation was found between caregiving burden and emotional expression of patients (r=.30; p<0.05) and caregivers (r=.52; p<0.0001). In addition, it was determined that there was a relationship between caregiver burden and perceived social support (r=-.31; p<0.05) and the duration of caregiving (r=.28; p<0.05). It was observed that 34% of the change in caregivers' burden was explained by their own emotional expression and perceived social support levels (F=8.012, p<0.0001, R=.63, R2 = .39, Adjusted R2 = .34).
