Abstract (EN)

Our thesis titled "Evaluation of Circassian Folk Beliefs in Düzce from the Perspective of the History of Religions" consists of an introduction and two main chapters. In the introduction, the scope, purpose, and methodology of the research are explained; additionally, the settlement process of Circassians in Düzce and general information about the region is provided. This section briefly touches on Circassian history, offering fundamental information about the process of Circassian settlement in the region and the background of this process. In the first chapter, the traditional beliefs and practices of the Circassians in Düzce concerning significant life transitions, such as birth and marriage, are examined. Rituals and traditions from this period are discussed considering field studies and compilations, and a detailed evaluation is made based on information obtained from oral sources. At the end of the chapter, similar practices among different Circassian clans and Turkish communities are analyzed and evaluated using a comparative method from the perspective of the history of religions. The second chapter focuses on death and post-mortem practices, as well as beliefs and practices in folk medicine related to life transitions. These topics are also subjected to comparative evaluations at the end of the chapter, highlighting similarities both within Circassian societies and historically. The study concludes that Circassians have a strong determination to maintain their cultural heritage and the traditions they brought from the Caucasus. Despite changing global conditions, their efforts to preserve their cultural identity from past to present have become notably prominent. The folk beliefs and practices of the Circassians have been minimally influenced by other cultural interactions, demonstrating their ongoing efforts to maintain their cultural uniqueness. Keywords: Düzce, Circassians, Folk Beliefs, Birth, Marriage, Death, Folk Medicine.
