A validity and reliability study of parent participation attitude scale in Turkey

Objective: Adapt the ?Parent Participation Attitude Scale-PPAS? into Turkish language.Method: This is a methodological study. Written consent was obtained from the owner of the scale and the institution with also approval of the concerned ethics committee. The study sample was composed of 277 nurses who working public hospital and university hospital. Parent Paticipation Attitude Scale developed by Seidl ve Pillitteri(1967) and revised by Gill in 1990 was translated into Turkish. The scale is consisted of 24 items which are assessed by a Likert type 1-5 rating scale. The thirteen items are negative items in scale. The internal consistency coefficient of the original scale is 0.74.Results: The scale was translated into English by four specialists and re-translated into Turkish by four specialists for the language validity. For the content validity, opinions of 10 experts were obtained and following an analysis, the scores of the experts were found to be consistent with each other (KW=0.116, p=0.26). The internal consistency reliability coefficient was 0.67 for the total scale. As a result of the item analysis, the item-total score correlation coefficients were found to be statistically significant ranging between -0.10-0.53 (p<0,01). Test re test reliability coefficient for overall the scale was found r=0,98.Conclusion and suggestions: The scale was found reliability to use in Turkiye. This scale (PPAS) should be applied and evaluated which is reliability and validity to different health professionals.Keywords: Family centered care, parent participation, nursing, scale, validity and reliability.
