Contemporary applications of marbling art to ceramic surfaces: A experimental study

This study examines the application of traditional Turkish marbling art on ceramic biscuit surfaces and evaluates contemporary interpretations in this field. Within the scope of the research, a comprehensive literature review was conducted on the history, techniques and materials of marbling, the works of artists applying marbling on ceramic surfaces were examined and 32 experimental applications were realized by the researcher. These applications, ranging from traditional marbling techniques to modern approaches, were tested on various ceramic forms. In the study, a synthesis of traditional and contemporary techniques was achieved by using traditional and modern materials. The results showed that marbling can be successfully applied on ceramic biscuit surfaces. The findings revealed that battal marbling technique gives effective results on large surfaces, scalloped marbling creates interesting optical effects on cylindrical forms and floral marbling is open to new interpretations on three-dimensional objects. Among modern techniques, gunpowder marbling and Suminagashi have been observed to create unique effects on ceramic surfaces. The study compared the effects of different thickeners such as chitre and CMC, synthetic and earth paints on ceramic surfaces and determined the optimal application methods. The study also examined how three-dimensional ceramic forms affect the perception of marbling patterns. In conclusion, this research has shown how the combination of marbling and ceramic arts can enrich traditional Turkish arts with contemporary interpretations and has presented technical challenges and solutions for future studies in this field.
