Ebû Bekr es-Sûlî and his place in Arabic literature

This dissertation examines the life, scholarly personality, linguistic orientation, literary perspective and critical methodology of Abū Bakr al-Ṣūlī—one of the most prominent intellectual figures of the Abbasid period—wiOrcid numarası al *Open Researcher and Contributor ID olan bilimsel araştırmacı tanılama sistemithin a comprehensive and integrated analytical framework. The study contextualizes al-Ṣūlī within the political, social and cultural conditions of his era and demonstrates how the intellectual climate of the Abbasid court shaped his thought and scholarly formation. It systematically evaluates his contributions in diverse fields such as linguistics, literature, historiography, narration, chancery practices, poetic criticism, didactic writing and cultural transmission. The research analyzes al-Ṣūlī's criteria for selecting and transmitting linguistic material, his approach to narrative chains (isnād), his skill in reorganizing and classifying texts, his critical reasoning, and his reflections on classical poetry and the evolving literary taste of his time. Furthermore, the study explores how his experiences in court-centred literary circles influenced the development of literary memory, textual criticism, poetic comparison and historical writing. His principles of language instruction, his contributions to the institutional development of Arabic and his role in shaping the prose tradition are also examined. Ultimately, the dissertation demonstrates that al-Ṣūlī was not merely a transmitter who witnessed a particular stage of Arabic literature, but rather a foundational intellectual who actively shaped this tradition, nourished critical thought, systematized method and profoundly influenced subsequent generations.
