Example of reading novels in the context of literature geography: İnce Memed novels

In this study, the four-volume novel İnce Memed, which is one of the most important works of Turkish Literature in the Republican Period -the most important one according to many critics- has been examined in the context of Literary Geography. In the novel İnce Memed, the place is Çukurova and the Taurus. Yaşar Kemal, the creator of the İnce Memed character, wrote Çukurova and the Taurus in his novel İnce Memed, almost like a geographer. He described the climate of Çukurova and the Taurus Mountains like an ecologist, biodiversity like a biologist, and landforms like a geomorphologist. All elements of human geography, settlement and population, culture, migration, livelihoods, and social structure were written as if they were written by a human geographer. The rich geographical elements in İnce Memed are discussed in all their aspects in this study. An Example of Reading Novels in the Context of Literary Geography: In this study, İnce Memed novel series, geographical elements were determined by content analysis method, and the geography of Çukurova and the Taurus Mountains was tried to be explained by geographically centered reading. Within the scope of the thesis study, the four-volume novel İnce Memed was read, firstly the names of places, geographical formations and landforms were determined, then the events and phenomena belonging to human geography were determined. In the second stage of this study, fieldwork was carried out, the locations mentioned in the novels were visited, and 1/100,000 and 1/25,000 maps of the locations were drawn. A Novel Reading Example in the Context of Literary Geography: This study, titled İnce Memed novel series, will contribute to geographers and men of letters, as well as sociologists, political scientists, economists and historians in their academic studies.
