Events in the local press in the Aegean 1963-1967

Like in the past, Cyprus has witnessed struggle of powerful countries in this day and age because it has an important strategic position in East Mediterranean and Middle East. Greeks efforts on realization of enosis intensified in 1963 and it was put into practice as ?Massacre on Turkish people. Many Turkish people who were exposed to the policy either death or migration? were forced to immigrate and the rest of them was slaughtered by Greeks. Importance of 1963-1967 period is that the disintegration of Turkish people and Greeks actually began in this period. Cyprus Dispute became important on Turkish- Greek relation particularly after Cyprus events in 1963. Without doubt, the solution of Cyprus dispute will settle Turkish- Greek conflicts. Depending on Cyprus Dispute, this period plays a decisive role on both Turkey-USA and Turkey- SSCB relations. Within the years between 1963-1967, Local press in Aegean Region sought to proclaim the rigths of the Turkish opinion to the public; Making great effort to block Enosis, It gave support to Turkish Cypriots. In that years, the perspective of Turkish press on Cyprus Problem was more sensitive, naive and warmer with respect to these days. This condition is related to the fact that Cyprus is not well known and Turkey is lonely for Turkish Cypriots. In terms of relation between Cyprus and Turkey, this period reflects the attitude that Turkish Cypriots are considered important and are remained distantly. This situation was hardly changed after the period of 1974, the relation between Turkey and Cyprus turned into the relation of dominant- dominated. Being turned into the relation between mother land and young(little) land, it has caused that Turkey has been held responsible for all mistakes of Cyprus. By using the way of language and attitude , Turkish local press has taken responsibility for this erratic relation. Particularly, in the light of information that Cyprus news was censored after 1960 when there was increasing number of oppression, we can understand the situation better. Because press was censored with respect to the publishing of news and photos about actions and incidents in Cyprus owing to the occurences of 6-7 September, 1955. In terms of press, Those days can be called as `dark period? and we see the fact that local press in Aegean Region has made an endeavour in order to make clear to the Cyprus Problem.
