Examining the influence of physical variables in classrooms on students via internet of things application

Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of physical variables (temperature, humidity, air quality, light, sound) on students' attention, motivation, attitudes and academic success perceptions. For this context, these effects were examined and by developing Internet of Things (IoT) application, it was made possible for students to follow these physical variables. Then, the effects of these variables on students' attention, motivation, attitudes and academic success perceptions were analyzed. In this study, one of the quantitative research designs, causal-comparative research design was used. The sample of this study consists of 262 students studying at Ataturk University Kazım Karabekir Faculty of Education. Purposive sampling was used to choose the sample of the study. Since the physical variables in the study environment are examined; the study was conducted in five different classes with different characteristics such as small class, normal classroom, amphi, chemistry laboratory, computer lab. Within the scope of the IoT application, a prototype that can measure the physical variables of the classes and send them to the internet environment was developed, and the students in five different classes were trained for these physical variables for six weeks. During the course of the application, students were asked to take a survey when the physical conditions were good and bad. Classes were divided into two groups according to their physical and physical condition, as well as physical conditions. After this distinction, we examined the effects of physical variables and students' ability to follow physical variables with IoT application. The results showed that there was no significant effect of humidity on students and no significant effect of physical variables on attitude; temperature, air quality, light and sound were found to have significant effect on attention, motivation and academic achievement of the students. It was also found that monitoring physical variables with IoT application positively affected students' attention, motivation, attitude and academic success perceptions.
