AI utilization and ethics in higher education: Perspectives from faculty members and university students

The aim of this study is to examine the perspectives of university faculty members and students regarding the ethical dimension of artificial intelligence use in education. The research was conducted using an explanatory sequential mixed methods design. In the quantitative phase, separate survey forms developed for students and faculty members were completed by 1,083 students and 135 faculty members. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics. The findings indicate that both groups hold generally positive views on the ethical dimension of AI use in education, while also pointing to areas in need of further development. In the qualitative phase, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 23 students and 14 faculty members. In the qualitative phase, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 23 students and 14 instructors; the data were analysed by thematic analysis method in line with inductive and deductive approaches.The analysis revealed seven main themes: tools; benefit and functionality; user approaches; ethical risks; ethical risk management; resources and support; and long-term impacts. The findings offer a comprehensive perspective on the ethical dimension of AI use in higher education and highlight areas that require improvement from the perspectives of both faculty members and students.
