Perceptions and attitudes of stakeholders towards ecotourism: An exploratory study in Düzce province

This study aims to comprehensively examine the ecotourism potential of Düzce province and its impacts on rural development with stakeholders' opinions. In the research, the perceptions and attitudes of stakeholders towards ecotourism in Düzce province were evaluated. The study was conducted using quantitative and qualitative data collection methods, with data collected through surveys and interviews. The data obtained through surveys and in-depth interviews were analyzed to reveal the economic, environmental, and social impacts of ecotourism. Furthermore, strategic recommendations were developed on how the ecotourism potential of the region can be harnessed for sustainable development. The findings indicate that if Düzce's natural and cultural richness are effectively utilized through ecotourism, they can make significant contributions to the local economy. It was determined that ecotourism has positive effects such as increasing the income levels of the local population, creating employment opportunities, and raising environmental awareness. In the scope of the research, interviews were conducted with a total of 148 tourists. 85% of the tourists interviewed expressed satisfaction with the natural beauty of Düzce, and 90% stated they would recommend it to others. 70% of the participants engaged in hiking, 30% in photography, and 20% in camping activities.The results of the study emphasize that ecotourism activities in Düzce province should be planned and implemented in accordance with sustainable development goals. Moreover, it was found that the positive attitudes of the local people towards ecotourism are crucial for the successful execution of such activities. In this context, it is essential for local administrations, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector to work collaboratively to fully realize the ecotourism potential.
