El-Haris el-Muhasibi, actions of the heart, asceticism, organs quest And studies

This thesis consists of an analysis and a critical edition of El-Haris el-Muhasibi's work entitled el-Mesail fi A'mâli'l-Kulûb ve'l-Cevârih. The book sheds light on the formative period of Islamic Philosophy and Sufism. El-Muhasibi had a significant contributions in the fields of Jurisprudence, Theology, and Principles of Religion as well. However, he is mostly known for his Sufi tendencies. This particularly shows differences between actions of the heart and the mind, which was a point of tension between philosophers and Sufis. Furthermore, it synthesizes legal and sufi ideas, and presents a good exaple of the science of Islamic psychology. Our study also includes a critical edition of the text based on the two manuscript copies that have survived. This critical edition will enable modern researchers to access a reliable and important text of the formative period of the Islamic thought.
