Semantics is the science that studies the meaning and is interested in it. This research is entitled in: (Derived Names in Al-Mutanabbi's Diwan as a semantic and rhetorical study) is concerned with the collecting derivatives from Al-Mutanabbi's Diwan and studying them as a semantic-rhetorical study. The reason for choosing this research is to look at the structures of derivatives in the poetry of a poet who filled the world and occupied people, and to analyze the derivatives contained in it, explaining their relationships, semantics and eloquence, indicating the prevalence of semantic units and the relationship of words to each other within the semantic field, and the connotation of the word within the context, benefiting from the efforts of grammarians and linguists ancient and modern, comparing what they reached with the linguistic use of those derivatives in Al-Mutanabbi's Diwan. The most important difficulties I faced were the lack of theses that depend on the study of derivatives structures in the Arabic library and the limitation of some of them to merely collecting statistics without entering into the semantic dimension of these structures. I divided the research into five chapters preceded by an introduction and entrance. I talked in the entrance about a set of issues for their importance later, I clarified the discharge linguistically and idiomatically, and the field of morphology with its usefulness and importance at the ancients and moderns. I tackled with the concept of semantics, the reasons for semantic development, the concept of semantics in the Arab heritage, its concept in the modern era, and the relationship of morphology with semantics and rhetoric, then I mentioned an introduction to Al-Mutanabbi and his stature in Arabic poetry, in which I dealt with: critics' interest in his poetry, the stature of his poetry, and a brief about some of the explanators of his poetry, and finally I clarified the meaning of derivation in language, the idiomatic meaning of derivation, types of derivation, the origin of derivatives, and the relationship between derivation and exchange and between the sciences of semantics and rhetoric. In the first chapter, I dealt with the Subject Name, and studied the definition of the Subject Name, the morphological formulation of the triple and non- tripartite Subject Name, the Subject Name between the nominal and the actual, and some of the connotations of the use of the Subject Name in Arabic language, and I counted the use of Subject Name in the Diwan and its connotations. The second chapter includes the study of two derivatives (exaggeration forms and similar adjectives), and I have collected them for convergence their forms and their direct association with the Subject Name, although I prefer to study them in a separate chapter from it. I studied in the first section of this chapter the formulas of exaggeration, this section included the concept of the formulas of exaggeration linguistically and idiomatically, and morphological formulas for formulas of exaggeration (standard, and auditory), and I counted in the applied aspect the use of formulas of exaggeration in the Diwan, I studied applied models to their connotations and studied the rhetorical aspects in the selected verses. The other section in this chapter was dedicated to the study of the similar adjective, as I clarified the concept of the similar adjective idiomatically, the weights of the similar adjective, the connotations of the similar adjective, and the difference between the Subject Name and the similar adjective, I showed the agreement of the Subject Name and the similar adjective. While in the applied aspect, I have counted the uses of the similar adjective, and clarified its connotations and the rhetorical aspects of applied models. I studied in the third chapter (the Object Name), as I dealt with the concept of the Object Name, the formulation of the Object Name (from the triple, and non-tripartite), and borrowing formulas or alternating connotations between the Object Name and other morphological formulas, I also counted in the applied aspect the use of the Object Name, and studied applied models to its connotations for the tenses in the Diwan, and devoted a special section to the semantic alternation between the Object Name and other morphological formulas in the Diwan. The fourth chapter of the study included (the Names of Time and Place, and the Preference Name), as I studied in the first section the Names of Time and Place, and this section included in its theoretical aspect the linguistic meaning of the place, the linguistic meaning of time, the definition of the Names of Time and Place (idiomatically), and their formulation. While the applied aspect included a statistical study of the use of the Names of Time and Place in the Diwan, the connotations of the use of the triple and non- tripartite Time Name in the Diwan, and the connotations of the use of the triple and non-tripartite Place Name in the Diwan. The other section was devoted to the study of (the Preference Name), as I explained its definition linguistically and idiomatically, and how to formulate it, with clarification of the conditions necessary for its formulation, and the linguistic connotations of the Preference Name with its uses in Arabic language. Also, I counted, in the applied study of the Preference Name in the Diwan, uses of the Preference Name, I clarified the connotation of the use of the Preference Name in the Diwan, and analyzed examples of overlapping formulas with the Preference Name in the Diwan. The last chapter (the fifth) is devoted to the study of (the Machine Name), and the theoretical aspect includes the linguistic meaning of the Machine Name, the idiomatic meaning of the Machine Name, and the derivation of the of the Machine Name. On the other hand, the applied aspect included: the statistics of Al-Mutanabbi's use of the standard and non-standard Machine Name in the Diwan with the analysis of the connotation of this statistic, mentioning the evidence for the derived Machine Name in the Diwan, the use of the non-standard Machine Name in the Diwan, and the use of the non-standard Machine Name indicating war in the Diwan. Also, I analyzed the connotations of the derived name in all the evidences that I chose, and I also studied a number of rhetorical aspects in it, believing in the close relationship between morphological formulas, connotation, and rhetorical uses.
