Abstract (EN)

Evaluation of the Effect of the Elimination Diet on Oxidative Stress and Inflammation Inflammation is a biological response of the body to tissue damage, pathogens, and harmful stimuli. The formation of inflammation is determined by the net effect of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory components. The disruption of the oxidant-antioxidant balance increases inflammation. There is a relationship between nutrition and gut inflammation. In recent years, some physicians and dietitians have routinely recommended a gluten-, casein-, and lactose-free elimination diet to individuals who aiming for healthy weight loss. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of this diet on oxidative stress and inflammation. The study group consisted of 31 individuals (29 women) with no known diseases. Participants followed an elimination diet for six weeks under the supervision of a dietitian. Before and after the elimination period, participant's weight, height, and BMI were measured. Blood samples were collected to analyze complete blood count parameters (white blood cells, neutrophils, lymphocytes, immature granulocytes, platelet count), ESR, CRP, galectin-1, galectin-3, TNF-α and IL-10 for inflammation, as well as TOS, TAS and OSI for oxidative stress. When comparing post-diet findings with pre-diet values, statistically significant differences were found in weight, BMI, ESR, lymphocytes, platelets, and galectin-3 levels (p<0.05). However, no significant differences were observed in TAS, TOS, OSI, TNF-α, IL-10, galectin-1, CRP, white blood cells, neutrophils, immature granulocytes, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, and systemic immune-inflammatory index (p>0.05). In conclusion, a gluten-, casein-, and lactose-free diet contributes to weight loss and a decrease in body mass index in individuals without known diseases or food allergies who aim for healthy weight loss. However, it is not considered to have a significant effect on the oxidant-antioxidant and inflammation-anti-inflammation balance.
