Abstract (EN)

The purpose of the thesis is to studying the novel of The Dram Shop which was written by Emile Zola who one of the authors of French literature and the novel of Sergüzeşt which was by written by Samipaşazade Sezai who one of the authors of Turkish literature on social criticism. In this study, first of all the definition of criticism was made and its historical process was mentioned. Then the importance of social criticism in Turkish and French literature has been discussed on novels. In this study, the position of women in French and Ottoman societies was discussed through Meyhane and Serguzesht novels. Although Emile Zola and Samipaşazade Sezai lived in different geographies and culture they mentioned common problems and situations related to women in their novels. As a result it is seen that the ideas and thoughts they want to emphasize are similar.
