Enderunlu Fazıl – Hûbân-nâme (Edition critique)

Fâzıl Bey, known as Enderunlu or Enderunî due to his education in Enderun, lived between the late 18th and early 19th centuries and realistically portrayed the life and daily routines of that period through his works. He was particularly renowned for his mesnevi style of writings and this study is based on the preparation of his work titled Hubân-nâme as a critical edition. The transliteration of the work, which describes the appearances and characteristics of men from various nations worldwide, into the Latin alphabet was conducted by Ercümend Muhib. However, the author did not incorporate verses he deemed inappropriate into this incomplete translation. Additionally, the piece was translated from its French version by Reşit İmrahor and was titled Book of Beautiful Boys. Nevertheless, due to additions in the French translation, it almost represents a different work altogether. Therefore, the critical edition of the text is significant to understand the poet's and his mesnevi's place and value in our literature. In this study, 31 manuscripts were examined, and a critical edition was constructed from 10 selected manuscripts. Through these examinations, the versions of the manuscripts were determined, and while the couplets were being translated, the majority of spellings in the manuscripts, meanings of couplets and words, and conformity to the meter were checked to establish the text. The aforementioned 10 manuscripts are presented in the apparatus of the critical edition.
