Abstract (EN)
Pricing strategies in competitive markets significantly influence profitability, market share, and customer satisfaction. This thesis develops a mathematical programming framework using a two-stage stochastic model to address pricing optimization under uncertainty. Designed to account for demand fluctuations, cost variations, and external market conditions, the model provides a robust decision-making tool for dynamic pricing scenarios. By integrating theoretical and practical elements, this research aims to enhance decision-making efficiency in complex and uncertain market environments. The primary objective of this study is to validate a mathematical framework that integrates stochastic demand modeling, flexible decision-making, and a two-stage structure. Stochastic demand modeling captures demand fluctuations using probabilistic methods, while flexible decision-making emphasizes adaptive strategies under uncertainty. The two-stage structure enables the separation of strategic (long-term) and tactical (short-term) decisions, offering a more effective pricing process. By bridging the gap between theoretical pricing models and practical applications, this research presents actionable strategies for firms to mitigate risks arising from market uncertainties while enhancing profitability. The methodological approach relies on advanced stochastic programming principles, systematically structuring the proposed two-stage stochastic model. In the first stage, initial pricing strategies are determined based on expected market conditions, incorporating historical data and expert opinions for scenario generation. In the second stage, price decisions are adjusted as uncertain factors, such as demand changes or cost fluctuations, materialize. Scenario-based analysis is applied to manage variability and uncertainty. The model's objective function aims to maximize expected revenue while balancing risks and operational constraints. Constraints are formulated to reflect production limits, budget requirements, and customer preferences. Furthermore, probabilistic modeling techniques, including Monte Carlo simulations and historical trend analysis, support the scenario generation process. A comprehensive evaluation of the proposed model was performed using both deterministic and stochastic scenarios to measure its effectiveness. Scenario optimization enabled the identification of pricing strategies that yield the highest expected profits while mitigating the downside risks. Comparative analysis with traditional pricing methods demonstrated the superior performance of the stochastic model in adapting to dynamic market conditions. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to examine the impact of key variables, such as price elasticity of demand and cost fluctuations, on model outcomes. The study's findings indicate that implementing the two-stage stochastic model can lead to substantial revenue improvements. Empirical validation using real-world data from the retail sector showed an average revenue increase of 12% compared to static pricing strategies. Furthermore, the model effectively reduced downside risks by 20% in low-demand scenarios and improved operational efficiency by providing more accurate price adjustments based on market responses. These results highlight the advantages of incorporating stochastic elements into pricing frameworks, particularly in volatile sectors where traditional approaches fail to capture rapid market changes. In addition to the quantitative benefits, the model offers qualitative advantages for decision-makers. It provides a transparent and adaptable decision-making framework, facilitating the alignment of pricing strategies with broader business goals. Companies can enhance their competitive advantage by using the model to navigate uncertain market environments, respond proactively to demand shifts, and optimize resource allocation. Additionally, the scenario-based approach encourages continuous learning and improvement by refining pricing strategies based on market feedback. This thesis makes notable contributions to the fields of operations research and pricing strategies. By introducing a scalable two-stage stochastic model specifically designed for pricing optimization, it bridges the gap between academic research and real-world applications. It offers firms actionable insights for managing risks while maximizing profitability under various market conditions. Additionally, it establishes a flexible decision-making framework adaptable to different industry settings. This model can be tailored to diverse market environments by adjusting the input parameters to reflect sector-specific demand patterns, cost structures, and competitive landscapes. Integrating stochastic modeling into pricing decisions presents several benefits. Firms can directly apply this model to real-world pricing scenarios, enhancing both short-term and long-term outcomes. The model facilitates dynamic responses to market changes, supporting firms in maintaining a competitive advantage. Furthermore, the findings can guide policymakers in developing frameworks that promote market stability and consumer satisfaction. Through scenario analysis, decision-makers can explore a range of possible outcomes, allowing for proactive responses to emerging market trends. Moreover, the flexibility of the two-stage stochastic model offers practical advantages in resource allocation, inventory management, and supply chain coordination. By incorporating uncertainty into the decision-making process, firms can optimize their resource utilization and reduce unnecessary operational expenses. Additionally, the model's ability to simulate various market conditions provides valuable insights into pricing resilience under adverse scenarios. In addition to its primary contributions, this research highlights the significance of sensitivity analysis in understanding the relationship between model parameters and pricing outcomes. Decision-makers are empowered to test different assumptions and explore worst-case scenarios, leading to more informed pricing strategies. Furthermore, the adaptability of the model enables firms to adjust their pricing decisions in real-time as new market data becomes available, increasing responsiveness and agility. Collaboration with stakeholders, including supply chain partners and financial analysts, can enhance the effectiveness of the pricing model. Sharing market insights and aligning pricing strategies across the value chain can lead to synchronized decisions and better financial performance. Additionally, the incorporation of external data sources, such as macroeconomic indicators and competitor pricing data, can further improve the accuracy and reliability of model predictions. Furthermore, the ethical implications of pricing optimization are considered. By ensuring transparency and fairness in pricing decisions, companies can build stronger customer trust and brand loyalty. Ethical considerations also involve avoiding price discrimination practices that may harm certain consumer groups. Regulatory compliance remains essential to prevent unethical pricing behaviors, making the implementation of transparent pricing algorithms crucial. This study underscores the importance of integrating ethical considerations into algorithmic decision-making, encouraging companies to adopt socially responsible pricing strategies. Future studies may further develop this framework by incorporating additional market factors, such as competitor actions or regulatory changes. The applicability of the model can also be extended to other sectors, including technology and manufacturing. Additionally, further research could explore the integration of machine learning techniques into scenario generation and real-time decision-making. Enhanced predictive analytics may provide even greater accuracy in demand forecasting, leading to more effective pricing adjustments. Moreover, an exploration of model generalizability across international markets could yield valuable insights into cross-border pricing strategies. This expanded understanding could offer firms enhanced adaptability and resilience in managing global market dynamics. This thesis provides valuable insights for firms seeking to optimize pricing strategies in uncertain environments and serves as a foundation for continued advancements in pricing optimization research and practice.
