Male figures in Erendiz Atasü's novels

Erendiz Atasü (1947- ) is one of the important authors of modern Turkish literature. Short stories, essays, and novels of the author who has got many awards with her writings, are significant for modern Turkish literature in terms of their subjects and themes. The impacts of her life in her works are an understanding of her literary life. She is an author who analyses society's social and political disintegrations and enriches herself with new values. Atasü's art comes from not only the line spaces in her works but also the realities of Turkey and life itself. As a woman writer, she does not stand indifferent to social and political facts. Atasü continues to move on in her literary career without restraining her art and at a threshold and awareness of a kind of specified responsibility. It is known that Atasü started her literary life writing short stories. While expressing that she is a short story writer, she frequently states that she feels responsible towards the Turkish language and women. It is known that the author wrote her short story books by seeing women being exposed to injustices almost every day, and with several womanly experiences. This study aims to examine Atasü's novels from a feminist and patriarchal point of view and put forth the author's novel conception by treating it around male characters. The male figures in Atasü's novels are presented both physically and mentally, examined by emphasizing where they stand in their lives, treated with the phenomenon of patriarchy, and their being alienated from their place in society or alienated from their lives have been observed. In the thesis, male figures in Atasü's novels are referred to individually. In addition, male figures' being in a situation of conflict with female figures is also emphasized. This study while attempting to put forth the perspectives of male figures in Atasü's novels, has also revealed the bond of the author's male figures with traditional and modern society.
