Anger, assertiveness and related factors among adolescents

Abstract (EN)

The purpose of research is to investigate anger emotion and expression of this emotion, level of assertiveness and related factors among adolescents. The population of the study was planned as descriptive, 2274 students that is studying in high schools in İzmir/Bayraklı in 2014-2015 education years. The sampled group was formed by 404 students from Nuri Atik Vocational and Technical Anatolia(199) and Mustafa Kemal Anatolia High Schools. The number of sampling was formed with sampling process by stratified, cluster sampling and simple accidental sampling. The number of sampling was calculated 269 with sampling process by known population and the number of sampling was found 404 with 1.5 pattern effect. Required permissions were taken from the institutions, consents were obtained from students. Personel Information Form, Trait Anger Expression Inventory(STAXI) and Rathus Assertiveness Inventory (RAE) were used as collection tools. Data analysis was performed by using descriptive statistics, Student t test, One Way Anova, Mann Whitney-u, Kruskal-Wallis and correlation tests by using SPSS(Statistical Package for Social Sciences)21 programme. Results were evaluated in 95%confidence interval, p<0.05significance level. The sapling group of research consisted students formed 166 (%41,1) girls and 238 (%58,9) boys. Students are between 13-19 age and average of age is 16,20±1,17. 371 (%91,8) of students expressed that lived in big cities for longest time and 285 (%70,5) of students expressed income defrays expense. The average points of subscales of Trait Anger Expression Inventory were found 23.89±6.36 from "Continuous Anger" subscale; 18.07±4.46 from "Anger-In" subscale; 28.53±5.20 from "Anger-Out" subscale and 20.70±5.38 from "Anger Control" subscale. The average point of Rathus Assertiveness Inventory was found 8.08±17.92. Ages of the students were positively related with the levels of anger-in and anger-out of students. Continuous Anger ,Anger-In and Anger-Out Subscale average points of students living in villages and small towns fort he longest time were found considerably higher than students living in big cities(p<0.05). Continuous Anger and Anger-In Subscale average points of students expressed attitude of parents as "understanding" and satisfaction of relation with friends as "good" were found considerably lower (p<0.05). The students whose mother's education level is high school graduated and below have considerably lower average points of Anger-Out and Assertiveness, according to students whose mother's education level is university graduated and upper. The students whose father's education level is high school graduated and below have considerably lower average points of Assertiveness, according to students whose father's education level is university graduated and upper (p<0.05). The students that expressed them to have mental disease have considerably higher average points of Continuous Anger, Anger-In and Anger-Out, according to students expressed them not to have mental disease (p<0.05). The average points of Continuous Anger, Anger-In and Anger-Out of students have violence in the family are considerably higher, according to students do not have violence in the family. The average points of Continuous Anger and Anger-Out of students are exposed to violence in the family are considerably higher, according to students have violence in the family but are not exposed to violence (p<0.05). For te result, differences between continuous anger and anger expression average points were found according to demographic futures of the students. Substance abuse, suicide attemoted, satisfaction of family and friends relationships, disciplinary punishment and success status in the school effect continuous anger levels and anger expression manner of the students. The levels of assertiveness of students are positively related with levels of anger out expression of students. Towards results from the research anger management training for adolescents to express anger emotion in a suitable way and assertiveness training for adolescents to have assertive behaviour pattern were recommended.
