Determination of type 2 diabetes risk levels in adults

Abstract (EN)

Aim: Type 2 diabete, an important public health problem worldwide is a chronic metabolic disease. Identifying risky individuals is important for reducing the occurrence of disease and the development of complications of the disease. This study was carried out to evaluate the diabetes risk of adults. Method: We conducted this descriptive and cross-sectional study between December 2020 and May 2021 in three family health centers in Kalkınma region of Trabzon province. We included 392 people aged 18 years over had not been diagnosed with diabetes before. Anthropometric measurements of the participants were made by the researchers. The questionnaire developed by the researchers, including questions about the sociodemographic characteristics of the participants and the Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISK) scale, was applied face to face. Results: 52,0% of the participants were women, 66,6% were married The median age of the participants is 34 (IQR: 27-45); body mass index (BMI) median is 27,2 (IQR: 24.1-31.4) kg/m². The mean waist circumference of all participants was 94,2 ± 13,8 cm (min:58, max:132); the median waist circumference of the women was 88 cm (IQR: 80-102) and the median waist circumference of the men was 97 (IQR: 92-104) cm measured. The median total score of all participants from the FINDRISK scale was 9 (IQR: 5-12). It was determined that 16.3% of the individuals were at high or very high diabetes risk level. Conclusion: Screen adults for diabetes by family physician, it is important to for struggle with the disease. It is recommended to use the FINDRISK questionnaire, which is inexpensive and understandable screening method, as well as being fast and easily applicable, to identify people at risk for diabetes.
