Man's use of family planning methods women's impact on sexual life

Özdemir H. Effects of Family Planning Methods Used by Man on Female Sexual Life The study aimed to determine the effects of family planning methods used by man on sexual life of women. Cross-sectional study have been carried out on married womens wich were 15-49 years old, registered at 2nd and 12th Family Health Centers in Aydın and protected via condoms or withdrawal methode. The sample included available 518 pre-menopausal women with active sex life, having no known psychiatric disease and sexual dysfunction in herself and her husband (C:%58.1, WD: %41.8). Data were collected via a questionnaire and Sexual Function Index (IFSF) its validity and reliability were made by Ayseçkin Yılmaz and Yıldız Eryılmaz (2004). Self-reported data were collected by the researcher via home vists of women at their houses after institution permissions, approval of Institututional Ethics Committee and and informed consents. Data were analyzed with Mann-Whitney U, Kruskall-Wallis and regression analysis and P<0.05 was accepted as significant. The mean age of women was 34.97±6.49. They had nuclear family (%82.6), and high school and higher education degrees (%58.3). Methods-specific counseling was higher for condoms (%23.3 vs 13.4, p<0.05). Satisfaction and sexual desire were higher in withdrawal, and good sexual life perception was higher in condoms (p<0.05). 38.0% of women had IFSF score of 29.78±5.73. Sexual dysfunction was %35.9 in condoms and 41.0% in withdrawal, and in condoms lesser SD were experinced in all dimentions except the sexual satisfaction (p<0.05). Women's self sexual evaluation, numbers of weekly sexual intercourse, SD and used method and duration of the method's usage explained 20.0% of their sexual life problems and actually used method explained 1.1% of their sexual life problems (p<0.05). Male family planning methods affect women's sexual life, and withdrawal increase the rate of SD. SD affected at most by sexual life and related perceptions and used method (p<0.05). It is proposed that awareness trainings in relation to the FP and sexual life should be provided to couples, sexual counseling should be integrated into the FP, and these should be started before marriage and continuity should be ensured.
