Development of a screening approach for the risk of mathematics learning difficulties in early childhood

In this study, it was aimed to realize an effective and practical approach to screen the risk of mathematics learning disability (MLD) in early childhood, using a transfer/rating-based measurement tool (Learning Disability Early Symptoms Screening Scale [ÖGEBTÖ]) and direct measurement tools (Anatolian Sak Intelligence Scale [ASIS] and Test of Early Mathematical Ability Test-3 [TEMA-3]) were examined relationally in the assessment of MLD risk. The research model is a relational screening design, one of the quantitative research methods. During the data collection phase, ASIS and TEMA-3 were applied one-on-one to the participating children by the researcher. The ÖGEBTÖ was answered online by the participant parents. The findings obtained with the participation of 111 children (average age 65 months) and their parents revealed that ÖGEBTÖ scores were moderately related to both TEMA-3 and ASİS scores. As a result of the hierarchical regression and multiple linear regression analyses, it was seen that the ÖGEBTÖ tool significantly predicted the ASİS and TEMA-3 scores. ROC curve analyzes revealed that the ÖGEBTÖ and ASİS subtests are usable tools to determine the risk of MLD. As a result of the analysis and discussion in the light of the findings, a screening approach that can be carried out effectively and practically using ÖGEBTÖ, ASİS subtests and TEMA-3 was proposed. The limitations of the research were discussed and recommendations for further research were offered.
