What Early Republican architecture says: Historiographic reading the architectural photographs of La Turquie Kemaliste journal through visual theories and architectural texts

In the thesis, architectural photographs of the journal La Turquie Kemaliste (1934-1948), which was published by the General Directorate of Press in 49 issues and 38 volumes, in French, German and English to be served to the foreign press, was investigated for what the message of the early republic period with visual theories and historical texts. In the journal, a modern visual language was created by instrumentalizing architecture. How, in which places, and over which concepts the new architecture and the new people of the new Turkey were brought together is another research question of the thesis. With the architectural photographs in the journal, it has been examined how the New Turkey relates to the past from which points, which points it leaves in the dark by not taking, how it creates the "other" and for what purpose it does this. The process covered by the thesis in order to understand what the photographs say; It was started from the intentions of using photography and press in the Ottoman Empire, and then it was examined in the light of historical processes until 1948, which was the end of the journal. Not only the Ottoman Empire, which was behind the Republic in terms of historical continuity, but also with the contemporary transnational examples of the visual language and press in the magazine, research continued on the visual culture of the journal with the concepts of seperate, continuity and alignment.
