Women's representation in periodicals of the Early Republican period: The example of Ana and Aile magazines

In this study, it is aimed to examine the position of women in society during the Early Republic period through the magazines "Ana" published between 1938-1942, and "Aile" magazines published between 1947-1952. Since the last periods of the Ottoman Empire, the status of women in society has become an important issue emphasized by Turkish intellectuals with different ideologies. From The Second Constitutional Period onwards, it has been observed that Turkish women's demands for rights emerged through newspapers and magazines. It is seen that women played an important role in the construction of a modern Turkish society that was desired to be achieved in the Republican Era. The improvement of women's status in society has also been effective in the development and modernization of Turkish society. Women have been seen as a fundamental actor in the modernization of society. The rights, and duties of the new Turkish woman were presented in an informative and guiding way through magazines to women who had gained their fundamental rights during the Republican Era. In this study, the positions of women in society and the ideal female image presented in these magazines were examined through the magazines Ana and Aile, which serve this purpose with the articles they contain. In this context, the ideal woman image presented in Ana and Aile magazines; She is modern, well-groomed, knowledgeable, hard-working, a good mother, and a good wife.
