Masculinity in Turkish political cartoon of the Early Republican era: Example of karikatür political humor magazine: 1936-1948

This study deals with the construction of masculinity and masculinities in the political cartoon of the Early Republican Period. While Early Republican period is commented through caricature, caricatures are also commented through masculinity. In the study, the theoretical and conceptual framework extending from feminism to masculinity studies and the historical background of masculinity with concepts such as politics, political concepts, gender regime, nationalism, militarism, orientalism, sexism and anticommunism were evaluated. This evaluation was embodied on the example of the Karikatür Political Humor Magazine published between 1936-1948. In this study, which examines the political events and ideological transformation of the period through masculinities, in the example of the Karikatür Political Humor Magazine, women were also a research subject because of the relational power relationship of masculinity, and their stutus in the construction of masculinity was also evaluated. The theoretical and conceptual framework and the historical background in the study reveal the historical and ideological course of the method to be followed when examining masculinity in political cartoons. In this course, considering the publication range of the Karikatür Political Humor Magazine, an evaluation could be made for both the One-Party Period (1936-1945) and the Multi-Party Period (1946-1948), some of its years. From the beginning to the end, the Second World War remained within the publication range of the journal and was evaluated.
