Plasma and erythrocyte levels of trace elements, calcium and magnesium in essential hyperhidrosis

Abstract (EN)

Essential hyperhidrosis is a disorder of excessive sweating occuring in the axillae, palms, soles or craniofacial region. The importance of the disease is causing psychosocial morbidity and the etiology is still is unknown. It is shown that oxidative stress may be involved in pathogenesis of essential hyperhidrosis. In this study, we aimed to determine the levels of trace elements (Se, Zn, Cu, Fe and Mn) which play an important role in oxidative stress and also the levels of Ca and Mg which have a part in membran physiologyThe blood samples taken from the patient group and control group were separated to plasma and erytrocyte and then bioelement levels were measured by ICP-OES instrumentErythrocyte levels of Se, Fe, Cu, Zn, Ca, and Mg were detected significantly higher in patient group than control group. Furthermore; plasma levels of Cu, Ca, and Mg were significantly lower in patient group than control group. Plasma levels of Se, Fe and Zn were showed no statistical difference between patient and control groupsWe thought that raised Cu and Fe levels in erythrocytes may play a role in increased intracellular oxidative stress and raised Se and Zn levels were secondary to oxidative stress. Decreased levels of extracellular Ca and Mg may play a role in membrane excitability in eccrine sweat gland or autonomic nervous systemIn conclusion, the different levels of trace elements detected between patient and control groups may play various roles in the pathogenesis of essential hyperhidrosis, associated with oxidative mechanism or by the way of unknown mechanism.
