Abstract (EN)

Introduction and AimIn this study we aimed to evaluate how the ascending aorta and left atrium diameters were affected in hypertensive patients with and without metabolic syndrome.Meterial and MethodsTotally 139 hypertensive patients, 92 with metabolic syndrome (23 males, 69 females, mean age 58.7 ± 9.4) and 47 without (26 males, 21 females, mean age: 60.3 ± 9.1) were included in this study. Echocardiographical ascending aorta and left atrium diameters of all patients were measured.FindingsThere was no significant statistical difference between both groups in terms of age and duration of hypertension. In both groups there was no difference between the ascending aorta diameters, but left atrium diameters were found to be larger in patients with metabolic syndrome which was not statistically significant. However, when just female patients were compared, left atrium diameters were found to be significantly larger in the group with metabolic syndrome.ConclusionIn our study, we could not find statistically significant echocardiographical difference in terms of ascending aorta and left atrium diameters in hypertensive patients with and without metabolic syndrome. However left atrium diameters were found to be significantly larger in females with metabolic syndrome. We believe that further investigations should be performed about this subject.Key WordsMetabolic Syndrome, Hypertension, Ascending Aorta, Left Atrium
