Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACT A STUDY ON EFFECTS OF ULTRASONIC APPLICATIONS ON THE CASTING OF ETIAL-145 ALLOY AND COMPARISON WITH CLASSICAL CASTING METHODS Kamer YAMAN M.Sc. Thesis; Department of Mechanical Engineering Adviser:Prof. Dr. Narin ÜNAL December 2004, 74 Pages The Etial-145 aluminum alloy is generally used in production of internal combustion engine pistons because of its high silisium content. In this study, the mechanical and wear properties in microstructure of Etial-145 was studied with different casting methods in different temperatures and periods such as ultrasonic wave application. Also in the study, ageing procedure was applied to all casting samples and wear experiment was applied to the samples which showed differentiation in micro structure. As a conclusion of the study, casting of Etial-145 in different temperatures was shown no differentiation in microstructure or mechanical properties however the casting procedure with the method of ultrasonic wave application in different periods result important differentiations in micro structure and caused increase in hardness values but on the other hand the wear properties of the samples negatively affected from ultrasonic wave application. KEY WORDS: Aluminum alloys, ageing, ultrasonic wave application mCOMMITTEE: Prof. Dr. Narin ÜNAL Prof. Dr. Hikmet RENDE Asst. Prof. Dr. Şevki Yılmaz GÜVEN iv
