Abstract (EN)

The study was carried out quasi-experimentally to determine the effect of interactive video design application on the level of nursing students' skills in the heimlich manoeuvre learning process. The population of the study consisted of second-year students enrolled in the Surgical Diseases Nursing course in the autumn and spring semesters of the 2023-2024 academic year at Karadeniz Technical University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing. The study was completed with 73 students between 07.12.2023-29.05.2024 (control n=36, experiment n=37). Data were collected with the 'Student Information Form', 'Heimlich Manoeuvre Information Form', 'Heimlich Manoeuvre Skill Evaluation Forms' and 'Interactive Video Evaluation Scale'. The control and experimental groups were taught the theoretical lesson about the Heimlich manoeuvre; the knowledge levels of the students were measured with the 'Heimlich Manoeuvre Knowledge Form' before and after the theoretical lesson. At the end of the lesson, the experimental group was informed about the interactive videos and shown how to access/use the application. After the theoretical course, skill measurements were made with Objective Structured Clinical Examination. Four weeks after the application, the skill and knowledge level measurements of the students were re-evaluated. Frequency, percentage, Chi-square test, independent and dependent groups t-test, ANOVA, Bonferroni test were used to analyse the data. When the skill scores were analysed, no significant difference was found between the adult, child and infant groups in the pretest application (p>0.05). In the post-test application, no significant difference was found between the groups in adult and child applications (p=0.858, p=0.463, respectively), whereas a statistically significant difference was found in the infant application (p=0.002). While there was no significant difference between the groups in terms of knowledge scores of the Heimlich manoeuvre in the pre-test and post-test (p>0.05), the retention of knowledge after one month was found to be significantly higher in the experimental group compared to the control group (p=0.023). As a result of our study, it was determined that interactive video application had an effect on students' heimlich manoeuvre application skills and knowledge retention. It is recommended that interactive video design application should be used in subjects and courses requiring different skills.
