Abstract (EN)

The existence of a healthy society is possible with a healthy family structure. It is seen that perceptions, attitudes and expectations regarding the institution of family and marriage have also changed due to the rapid social changes experienced today. Choosing to live alone rather than getting married has become more common. This research aims to examine the thoughts of individuals who prefer to live alone instead of getting married, regarding marriage and living alone, and the reasons behind these preferences. Qualitative research methods and phenomenology pattern were used in the research. The study group of the research consists of 6 men and 6 women from different ages and profession groups who preferred to live alone, determined by snowball sampling technique. The data of the research were collected through semi-structured interview forms and analyzed by content analysis method using the MAXQDA program. The findings of the research showed that the primary reason behind these preferences of those who prefer to live alone is individuality. It has been concluded that those who prefer to live alone prioritize their own choices and preferences and want to live a freer life where they can spare more time for themselves. It has been determined that individuals' reasons for avoiding marriage coincide with their reasons for preferring loneliness. It has been determined that marriage is avoided due to experiences in previous relationships and negative marriage examples witnessed around. It has been determined that many rituals and procedures traditionally followed during the marriage process are the primary reasons for avoiding marriage. Individuals also avoid marriage with the thought that they will have financial difficulties when they get married. It has been concluded that prejudices due to the family of origin and traditional and social media have a significant impact on individuals' avoidance of marriage.
