The relationship between emotional intelligence and marital adjustments of married women family counseling center example

Abstract (EN)

Emotional intelligence, which is the ability of the individual to understand the feelings of the individual and others and to communicate with others in order to solve the problems encountered in life, is thought to have importance for harmony in marriages where communication and conflict is intense. The aim of this study was to investigate the differences between the emotional intelligence levels of marriad women grouped as compatible and non-compatible. In addition, the relationship beetwen married women's emotional intelligence levels and marital adjustment were examined. On the other hand, it is examined of emotional intelligence levels and marital adjustments of married women according to sociodemographic variables. The study was carried out into a private Family Counseling Center under the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Services with 432 women married in Adana. In the study; Trait Emotional Intelligence Scale-Short Form (Petrides ve Furnham, 2000; Deniz, Özer and Işık, 2013) and Marital Adjustment Scale (Locke ve Wallace, 1959; Tutatel-Kışlak, 1999) were used as data collection tools. And also, the data about some sociodemograpfic variables of married individuals has been obtained by using Personel Information Form which has been designed by the researcher. Frequency and percentage distribution was used for demographic variables; moreover, t test and one-way ANOVA test was used for testing hypotheses with IBM SPSS Statistics 21.00. LSD and Tamhane test was used to evaluate variances. Marital adjustment group is based on the cut-off score of the marital adjustment scale. According to the results of the study, it was found that the levels of emotional intelligence (well-being, self-control, emotionality and sociability) of the women who were compatible with their marriages were higher than those of those who were non-compatible. There was a significant positive correlation relationship beetwen married women's emotional intelligence levels (well-being, self-control, emotionality and sociability) and marital adjustment. It has been detected in an another result that there was statistically significant difference between educational level, income level, working status variables and emotional intelligence levels of married women. However, there was no statistically significant difference between flirting period, age of marriage, marriage period, number of the child variables and emotional intelligence levels of married women. As another results, there was statistically significant difference between marriage period variable and marital adjustments of women married. However, it was found that there was no statistically significant difference between working status, education level, income level, flirting time, age of marriage, having children variables and marital adjustments of women married.
