The evaluation of the relations between marriage compliance and psychiatric disorders, attachment styles and temperament and character features

THE EVALUATION OF THE RELATIONS BETWEEN MARRIAGE COMPLIANCEAND PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS, ATTACHMENT STYLES ANDTEMPERAMENT AND CHARACTER FEATURESDr.Serap ErdoğanIn this study we aimed to evaluate the relation between marriage problems and demographicdatas with the attachment features, psychiatric statements and temperament and characterfeatures of the couples is aimed. Twentyfive couples who have marriage problems wereenrolled in to the study. Control group was consisted of 25 couples who don?t have anymariage problem. Their evaluations were made by SCID-I, SCID-II, TCI, BMPES and ECRI.In terms of the demographic datas, a relation between marriage problems and the existence ofthe mother-in-low and/or father-in-low in the home was seen in the patient group of the study.The compatible results were attained with the Bowlby?s attachment theory? assumptionsintended to explain the interactions in the marriage. In the couples who have marriageproblems, women primarily have avoiding and anxious attachment dimensions and men havehigh scores for avoiding dimension. These results were compatible with the datas obtainedfrom BMPES. Accordingly, men and women from the couples who exprienced problemsdetermined each other less reliable then the healthy controls, women described menunattached and more controller and men described women more dependent in relationship.The evaluation styles of men and women? were reciprocal and existence of relationship?sproblem was agreed by both partners. As a result of the psychiatric evaluations depressionwas determined in the 48% of the women in the patient group. This result was also importantto point out the reciprocal relation between marriage problems and psychiatric disorders. Themost important limitation of our research was the limited number of the patient in the studygroup. Beside that, it was the first study in which the sclaes mentioned above were usedtogether to evaluate the reciprocity of the relation and to determine the temperament andcharacter dimensions of the people who have marriage problems. There is a need to organizesimilar studies which have larger sample groups to generalize the results in the future.
