Examination of the social and emotional skills and cognitive flexibility levels of individuals participating in youth camps based on the characteristics of the camp

This study aims to examine how the social and emotional skills and cognitive flexibility levels of individuals participating in youth camps differ according to the characteristics of the camp. It is frequently emphasized in the literature that youth camps contribute to the social, emotional and cognitive development of individuals. In this context, the study focuses on understanding how young people are affected by these camps and which types of camps contribute more to the development of these skills. In the study, firstly, the concepts of social and emotional skills as well as cognitive flexibility are theoretically discussed and the potential effects of youth camps on these skills are discussed. The methodology of the study includes the collection of quantitative and qualitative data through questionnaires and observations. The study shows that youth camps positively improve individuals' social-emotional skills and cognitive flexibility. Factors such as camp type, age and leader support were effective in this development. A positive and significant relationship was found between social-emotional skills and cognitive flexibility; a moderate relationship was found especially with emotional appraisal and coping flexibility. However, no significant relationship was observed with cognitive control over emotions. In conclusion, it was observed that youth camps improve individuals' social-emotional skills and increase their cognitive flexibility. However, the level of these effects varies depending on the type and content of the camp. It is thought that this study will contribute to a better understanding of the effects of youth camps on the development of individuals and provide suggestions for making camp programs more effective.
