Exploring the relationship between existential concerns, attachment styles, and usage of dating applications in emerging adults

By examining the psychological dynamics, namely attachment styles, existential concerns, and the frequency of using digital dating applications, this study aims to uncover patterns and relationships that could provide deeper insights into the psychological challenges individuals face when engaging with dating applications. This study investigates the relationship between existential concerns, attachment styles, and the use of dating applications among emerging adults aged 18-29. The research sample consisted of 86 participants who completed the Existential Concerns Inventory and the Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised questionnaire. Participants use digital dating applications and experience various psychological dynamics in the process. Women exhibited higher levels of avoidant attachment, anxious attachment, and total scale scores compared to men. This suggests that women experience more psychological difficulties when using digital dating applications. Additionally, general anxiety levels were found to be significantly higher in LGBTQ+ individuals compared to heterosexual individuals. However, existential concerns did not significantly differ by gender. The trajectory of dating apps reflects a major shift in modern dating practices. This trajectory highlights the psychological complexities of digital dating and suggest the need for targeted mental health interventions and supportive policies for these demographic groups. Understanding the effects of digital dating applications on emerging adults more deeply can lead to significant steps to support these individuals' psychological health. The study's results demonstrate that digital dating is not only a social activity but also has significant psychological effects and shapes individuals' overall well-being.
