The relationship between personality traits, disease severity, and quality of life in individuals with different asthma phenotypes

Aim: This research explores how personality characteristics are associated with the severity of asthma and the quality of life across various asthma phenotypes. Material and Method: A total of 146 individuals followed up with a diagnosis of asthma at the Chest Diseases outpatient clinics of Hitit University Çorum Erol Olçok Training and Research Hospital will be included in the study, based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. During the examination by a chest diseases specialist, the asthma phenotype of each participant will be determined and recorded. The following clinical instruments will be administered to participants: the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised Short Form (EPQ-RSF), the Short Form-36 (SF-36), the modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) dyspnea scale to assess asthma severity, and the Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (AQLQ). In addition, sociodemographic characteristics of the patients will be recorded using a sociodemographic data form prepared by the researcher. Results: The findings indicated that individuals exhibiting elevated neuroticism levels tended to be associated with more severe asthma phenotypes, reduced compliance with treatment, suboptimal asthma control, and markedly lower scores across several domains of quality of life. Conversely, participants who scored higher in extraversion generally experienced more effective asthma control and reported better overall well-being. Although weak, some statistically significant positive correlations were identified between spirometric indices and specific aspects of life quality. In contrast, biological indicators such as eosinophil counts, BMI, and exacerbation frequency showed no significant association with quality of life measures. Conclusion: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between asthma phenotypes and personality traits, as well as the multidimensional impact of psychological factors on asthma control, treatment adherence, pulmonary function, and quality of life. The findings highlight the importance of holistic approaches to asthma management that take personality traits and psychosocial support into consideration.
