Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to evaluate airway and tongue volumes that are effective on airway and dentofacial pattern by using cone-beam computed tomograhy. In our study, 88 adult patients (n=39 male, n=49 female) were divided in three groups as hypodivergent (S-N/Go-Me <27°, S-Go/N-Me ratio > %69), normodivergent (27°37°, S-Go/N-Me ratio < %61) and class I (1°< ANB <3°), class II (ANB >3°), class III (ANB <1°). Influences of vertical growth patterns, sagittal skeletal relationships were analyzed on oropharyngeal (OP) and nasopharyngeal (NP) regions. Segmentation was done by Mimics 18.0 software. Oneway ANOVA and Tukey tests were used to compare the independent groups. Differences between groups were determined by using the Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney U test. Correlations between the variables were tested with the Pearson and Spearman's correlation coefficients. Analysis of variance indicated significant differences (p<0.01, p<0.05). The evaluation according to vertical patterns, NP airway volume of hypodivergent patients (n=28) was higher than other groups (p<0.01) and was statistically significant. As for the evaluation due to the sagittal pattern, OP airway volumes of class III patients (n=12) were found significantly higher when compared with class I (n=39) and class II (n=37) patients (p<0.01). It has been showed that measurements of OP vertical, posterior airway space (PAS), minimum axial area (minax) might give information about OP airway volume. The highest negative correlation was found between tongue volume and OP airway volume of class III patients (p<0.05). In conclusion, the highest airway values were observed in hypodivergent and class III groups. Tongue volume and OP airway volume were negatively correlated. Airway was effected by vertical growth pattern and sagittal skeletal relationships.
