Özet (EN)

This thesis study aims to investigate the effects of playing active video games (AVG) and vigorous intensity classical exercise (running) for 8 weeks, in terms of perceptual responses and physical fitness components by comparing between groups and sexes. Participants were randomized into three groups. Seventy-three volunteers completed the study: AVG n=12 men, n=12 women; Running n=14 men, n=10 women; Control n=13 men, n=12 women. In order to evaluate the physical fitness components of participants, cardiorespiratory endurance (VO2 max), maximal muscle strength (MMS), muscular endurance (ME), flexibility, body composition (BC), and for the detection of perceptual changes, rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and physical activity enjoyment score (ENJ) were examined. The data were tested with mixed design, between group and within group, univariate two-way analysis of variance, in which pretest data was assigned covariate. Consequently, the VO2 max (ml.kg−1.dk−1) and flexibility (cm) data of the AVG group were found to be statistically significantly higher than the running and control groups (p <0.05). For MMS and ME data, the results of the AVG group were found to be significantly higher than the control group (p <0.05). In addition, in terms of ENJ, AVG was found to be significantly higher than the classical exercise (p <0.01). Applied in this thesis study, AVG can be prescribed by experts as an enjoyable alternative that can be used as a substitute for high-intensity running exercise in both genders to improve and / or protect individuals' physical fitness.
