Abstract (EN)

From the early 2000th, Morocco has challenged sustainability as a way of development in construction. It adapted the concept to its current needs. The results are encouraging since the emergence of several green sustainable cities in the last decade. Moroccan cities are well known for their strong identity due to the long shaping of these cities through history. However, the new sustainability trends introduce new values and a new identity. The trends of globalization and the efforts to incorporate the concept of sustainability in the existing cities resulted in few contradictory choices. The study aims to discuss the example of Morocco as it is a unique one due to its historical background and climate context. It is currently an experimental laboratory of new settlements and green cities. With its pledge to become a leader in sustainability in the African continent, Morocco presents the failure and success of sustainability transition on an urban scale. This research takes account of the Moroccan position on the world scale. It aims to highlight its standing point in the global sustainability criteria by comparing six different projects with four leading sustainable cities in the world. Four projects are research projects and two achieved green cities: Zenata at the center of the country and Benguerir situated in the south. It highlights the reason behind the need for Moroccan green cities, the efforts that the government had made, and the problems that green Moroccan cities face while trying to maintain their identity. Morocco succeeded in creating a balance between the sustainability requirements and the conservation of its identity by returning to vernacular architecture. The country built two green cities: Zenata and Benguerir to integrate the pre-colonial Moroccan cities' v identity that both achieve a continuation of the existing identity and sustainability requirements
