Determination of the effect of weight loss on food craving in overweight and obese adult women

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of mood changes for overweight and obese adult female subjects, on nutrition decisions and change in the desire for excessive nutrient consumption before and after weight loss. The study was conducted within the three months after the Başkent University Medicine and Health Sciences Research Board decision was taken, with 25 overweight or obese adult females who were applied to Aris İstanbul Güzellik ve Bakım Merkezi. At the first meeting, information has been taken about the individuals social characteristics, nutrition habits, dietary changes, habits of late night eating, sleep patterns, anthropometric measures and body compositions. Visual Analogue Scale was applied to gain an understanding about how much they got the desire to consume some specific foods. Therefore, three day nutrition consumption data was taken from the individuals. To determine the physical activity level of individuals, International Pyhsical Activity Query (IPAC) and the Food Craving Questionnaire (FCQ) scale applied. According to age, gender, physical activity situation, lifestyle and physiological situation of the individual, the energy to be taken by healty nutrition program was decided to contain 55-60% carbonhydrate, 12-15% protein and 25-30% fat. To evaluate the effect of the excessive food craving before and after the diet, those scales were repeated after 10% weight loss of individuals. The mean age of the participants (n=25) was 30.4±9.52. There is a statistically meaningful difference between the average FCQ scores of the individuals before and after the weight loss (p<0.05). After the weight loss, individuals' craving situtations decreased for chocolate and chocolate products, cake and bakery products, potato chips, soda, fast-foods, fries, pasta-rice, pastry, ice cream and fruits, has statistically meaningful difference (p<0.05). After the weight loss, individuals' means of energy (kcal/day) carbonhydrate (TE %) total fat (TE %) decreased; protein (TE %) increased. There is a statistically meaningful difference between energy (kcal/day), carbonhydrate (TE %), protein (TE %), total fat (TE %) (p<0.05). There is a statistically meaningful difference between the means of vitamin A, vitamin E, niasin, folic asid, vitamin C, zinc and copper values before and after the weight loss (p<0.05). Before the weight loss, the mean of body weight was calculated 86.23±16.45 kg; after the weight loss, the mean of body weight was calculated 76.16±14.62 kg. Before the weight loss, the mean of BMI was calculated 31.88±5.51 kg/m2, . Before the weight loss, the mean of BMI was calculated 28.41±4.82 kg/m2. Before the weight loss, there was a positive correlation and statistically significant between energy and FCQ scores (p<0.05). Before the weight loss, there was a positive correlation and statistically significant between protein (TE %) and FCQ scores (p<0.05). After the weight loss, there was a positive correlation and statistically significant between total fat (TE %), total saturated fatty acid and FCQ scores (p<0.05). After the weight loss, there was a negative correlation and statistically significant between sediment and FCQ scores (p<0.05). After the weight loss, there was a negative correlation and statistically significant between folic acid, iron and FCQ scores (p<0.05); before and after the weight loss, there was not any correlation and statistically significant between other vitamins, minerals and FCQ scores (p>0.05). There was not any correlation between individuals means of height, weight, BMI, total body fat ratio, total body muscle, total body water, waist circumference, hip circumference, waist/hip circumference waist/height circumference with FCQ scores(before) and FCQ scores(after) (p>0.05). To conclude all of these results, while medical nutrition treatments were applied to obese individuals, the past nutrition habits, family members who were obese, working conditions and sleep patterns of those individuals must be taken into attention. If we put it in a nut shell, weight losses make improvements in life quality according to anthrophometric measures of the obese individuals. As a result, after the weight loss, there were some improvements observed about life quality and anthrophometric measures for obese individuals.
