The evaluation of the cartoons watched by secondary school students within the scope of skills specific to the field of science

The aim of this thesis is to analyze whether there are Science-specific acquirements, and the frequency of these acquirements are discoursed in the cartoons that are mostly preferred to be watched by secondary school students, broadcast on television and streaming media. In accordance with this purpose, "The Vikings", "Captain Tsubasa" and "Uğur Böceği ile Kara Kedi" broadcasted on TRT Çocuk, Cartoon Network, Yumurcak TV and Disney Channel were considered to study among the most watched and preferred cartoons by secondary school students. The first three cartoons were determined as the sample from favorite cartoons for the secondary school students' answers studying at Özdirek Secondary School in the Hamur city of Ağrı for this study. A total of 150 episodes were examined in this direction. In order to determine which Science-specific acquirements are used and to find their frequency in these three cartoons, content analysis and qualitative research method were chosen. In this research study, the dialogues in each cartoon section examined were written in text form and converted into graphics and tables by calculating of their frequency and percentage ratios. Data were analyzed by professionals to ensure reliability of the research. Most of the Science-specific acquirements were frequently discoursed according to data from examination of these three cartoons. Captain Tsubasa had the highest Science-specific acquirements frequency among the three cartoons while Uğur Böceği ile Kara Kedi had the lowest frequency. Communication, observation, team work was the most discoursed acquirement among Science-specific acquirements, while ability to recognize variables was the least discoursed acquirement in all three cartoons. In these three cartoons, which were examined according to the data obtained, the most scientific process skill was seen at the rate of 62.81% among the skills specific to the field of Science, while the minimum rate of Engineering and Design skills was achieved at the rate of 0.89%. When we compare the skills specific to the field of Science in the mentioned cartoons, teamwork with a rate of 33.6% and the ability to make inferences with a rate of 24.01% are seen the most, while the skill of recognizing variables is not used in all three cartoons. At the same time, it was observed that Captain Tsubasa had the most Science field-specific skills among the cartoons at the rate of 46.32%, while the cartoon Ladybug and Cat Noir had at least 19.8%.
