Abstract (EN)
One of the most important political, military, diplomatic, and historical conflict zones of the 20th century was Karabakh, the epicenter of the hostilities between Azerbaijan and Armenia and once ruled by Iran and Russia. When this region is considered in the context of its historical development from the past to the present, it can be described as a field where there is ongoing conflict, primarily over issues of language, religion, and culture, where material and spiritual resources are destroyed, and where people are subject to forced migration. Due to issues like the depletion of the aforementioned material and spiritual resources and the absence of ongoing development, it might be challenging to obtain objective information in this area. Even if the Karabakh problem is constantly discussed in newspapers and magazines, on social media, and in other verbal and written communication channels, all of them are considered to be limited in the context of visualization. Even the general global audience and local people are unaware of heated conflict settings or true life experiences because archive footage is typically included in the news. In reality, a lot of documentaries and movies are being made about everything from the occupation of this area to the loss of the cultural legacy, but the number is still not where it needs to be. Films and documentaries that generated a lot of buzz include "Haray", "Dolu", "Beyaz Atlı Çocuk", "Laçın Denizi", "Biz" ve "Sarılar-Karabağ Atının İzinde" in particular. In the context of the analysis of the film "Feryad (1993)," the goal of this study is to attempt and identify the connections between the historical development of the Karabakh Question in real life and the filmic reality (events in the film). In order to do this, the growth of cinema and the Azerbaijani film industry have been studied in the thesis' first section. As a result, general assessments of the use of cinema and movies as propaganda tools have been made, and instances of movies that deal with this topic have been noted in nations including the USA, Japan, and the USSR. The "Karabakh Problem" and its effects on Azerbaijani cinema are covered in the study's second section. This section explored the Karabakh Wars' historical development, political, military, and sociological contexts before examining how all of these translated into the Karabakh War in Azerbaijani film and the subject's position and significance within the medium. Films about the Karabakh conflict from the war and the immediate aftermath were also included in the study. Lastly, following the II. Karabakh War, the media reflections of the films that revisit this topic in Azerbaijani cinema are illustrated, along with examples of associated news stories. The third part, which examines the movie "Feryad," includes information about the film's introduction, cast, production, and behind-the-scenes activities. The movie's example of the Azerbaijan-Karabakh realities is then analyzed in terms of "content," "form," and "meaning." As a result, formal evaluations of the film's six scenes were conducted, and an attempt was made to identify the main psychological factors in each scene by comparing them to the feelings in Plutchik's Wheel. In the context of the film's semantic analysis, primarily psychological factors were taken into account, and the scenes of the movie were evaluated using the "Six Hats Thinking Technique," which represents six different perspectives. This is done in order to highlight the hidden forces at work in each and every move and action in the film. In this context, it has been demonstrated that the justice, hope, separation, empathy, humanity, conscience, harshness, compassion, and patriotism among other main psychological aspects that were identified during the film's meaning analysis were listed. As a result, although while the movie "Feryad" depicts the experiences of those who were present during the conflict, it is determined that the movie not only has documentary characteristics, reflects historical and sociological processes, but also focuses on individual and social psychological elements.
