Abstract (EN)
This master thesis study offers a serious game for lower extremity physiotherapy and rehabilitation. The proposed system is a computer game, where the exercises are transformed into game activities and monitored by collecting surface electromyography signals using BITalino that is a wearable data acquisition board and feedback to the physiotherapist because it records the performance of the patients. UNITY Game Engine is used for game design platform. This game system provides a goal-oriented exercise training to the patients for increasing their motivations. Electromyography is an electrical activity that is produced with contraction of muscles. The electromyography produced varies according to the contraction force of the muscles. The recommended exercises are active knee extension for quadriceps muscle, active knee flexion for hamstring muscles and terminal extension exercise for vastus medialis obliquus muscle. Real-time surface electromyography signals are received from BITalino in UNITY Game Engine and signal processing methods are applied on them; then the ball moves according to processed electromyography signals and thus the player patient collects points. Only a single surface electromyography channel is used for this study. The physiotherapist can remotely follow-up his/her patient's exercise performance through a web application. The feedback module shows the results of three feature extraction methods foreach the patient's exercises. With this feedback module, the physiotherapist can access the analysis of the exercises performed by the patient and obtain information of the patient's condition without making a manual examination.
