Abstract (EN)

Man's attempt to contact and to be socialised is one of the basic requirements of him.Man has expressed himself and his thought peculiar comminication means in every period as the proof of his exitence. He has reached an incredibly high level of technological development and social change along with the fact that he has begun to see the nature as a tool for his own purpose. Photograph and newspaper.the product of this change and development, have come to be the most important means of mass communication. It is in this sense that our stundy is intended to tackle the photograph as a means of mass communication with a special consideration to is products and its use in the press. This study tackles the development of photograph and its use in the press within the scope of technological, socio- cultural and economic changes during the process of socialisation. While technological changes have facilitated the easy use of photograph in every field, socio-cultural changes have influenced man's viewpoint of photograph. However, its relation to the truth has been the cause of new discussions on photography and new perspectives. This change and development has gained the photograph the status of being a very important means of mass communication in the face of other newly emerged and developed visual mass communication means. The study is divided into three chapters, considering the studies done on this subject so far. The first chapter is devoted to communication, mass communication and the development of mass communication means in connection with social developments. The second chapter is intended to trace back the birth and development of newspaper as a means of mass communication both in Europe and Turkey in connection with social developments again. The third chapter is primarily concerned with the artistic and technological development of photograph; then photograph as means of mass communication, its reality and re-presentation are evaluated in the light of analyses carried out; and finally, the use of photograph in the press as the news itself is presented with the early examples from the newspapers of the period.
