The use of photography in the museums and the criterias of photography as a collection object

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the different types of photography with their different usage in the museums and the criterias which make them collection objects as artworks in the museums. Through this research, many photography techniques, photography types and their categorisation were studied, and it is stated that they are used in every kind of museums in various ways. This part of the thesis includes the restoration and preservation of the photographic collections. According to this part, no matter how and where the photographs are used, they should be kept in proper conditions. Furthermore, useful informations were gathered from the museums abroad through the e-mail. By this way, the criterias which they consider while acquiring a new object for their collection, were stated. In addition to these e-mails, every museum?s web site were checked in order to get the maximum data. The achievements which enable the invention of photography, were started aproximately in 1727 and they are still proceeding today. There are almost 20 different photography techniques and 20 different photography types. When the museum structures were studied, it came out that those different types of photography are required in every department of the museums. Through this research, it came out that despite we have no photography museums in our country, there are plenty of them (approximately 700) in other countries and they consider some criterias while selecting a new photographic object for their collection. This subject was never studied before, thus, all the information from the museums were brought together and a complete list was created at the end of the last section. By this way one of the aims of this research, -the question of ?Which criterias are considered while acquiring new photographs to the museums??- is tried to be answered. At the end of this thesis, some additional information related to the main topic were also given to support the obtained results.
