A Turkish booklet for French soldiers: Le Drogman Turc -text, analysis-

In this thesis, a guidebook called Le Drogman Turc, written in French on Turkish by academician and writer Alexandre-Edmond Chodzko, is analyzed. In connection with this work, other transcription texts written in French from the 16th to the 19th centuries and articles, theses, papers and books on these texts are mentioned. The work in question consists of six chapters. The first four chapters provide information on the dialogues on topics such as health, economy, military life and daily life. The last two chapters are about grammar and vocabulary. The work has been prepared so that foreign soldiers can speak and understand Turkish. As such, it is aimed to be easy to understand and useful. The author of the work, the history of the work, the language characteristics of the period in which it was written, the dialogues and the vocabulary offer guidance and guiding clues to the studies of teaching Turkish to today's foreigners. With this work, the standards of Turkish knowledge required for soldiers began to be established. In this thesis, first of all, a transcription system is created, the Turkish sound equivalents of the letters are determined, the parts in French are translated into Turkish and then all Latin letter Ottoman Turkish text parts are analyzed within a certain method. On the other hand, by evaluating the work at issue, a picture of 19th century Turkish in terms of its phonology, morphology and semantics is presented and the common Turkish vocabulary of that period is determined.
