ABSTRACT SUBSTITUTING Si AND Ge INTO FULLERENE CAGE Mfikremin YILMAZ M. Sc in Physics Adviser: Prof. Dr. Bülent ULU? 2002, 34 Pages In this work, the production of Si or Ge substituted heterofullerenes using arc- discharge method was aimed and for this purposes an experimental setup was designed. The graphite rods 3 mm in diameter, 60 mm in length were used to produce doped fullerenes. The holes drilled in rods 1.5 mm in diameter were filled with Si or Ge powders. The graphite rods were vaporized by -80 A current passed trough in -100 torr He atmosphere and the fullerenes consisted soot was obtained. Fullerenes were extracted from the soot by washing it with CS2 and toluene. FTTR and mass spectra of Ge added samples reveal that Cm and C70 were effectively produced beside some possible Ge doped fullerenes. On the other hand, a series of peaks which possibly result from Si doped fullerenes are determined in mass spectra of Si added samples. For farther conclusion, NMR analyses of the samples are required and need to be considered together with the existing data. KEY WORDS : Fullerene, Si Heterofullerene, Ge Heterofullerene.
