Abstract (EN)

An essay is a prosaic genre in which an author writes about any topic s/he chooses, his / her thoughts and emotions in an informal style. This thesis concentrates on an analysis of Füsun Akatlı's essays, a writer in the Republic Era. The first Chapter of this thesis gives a genereal introduction to the essay genre. Also the chapter gives widespredd definitions of, and its relations to, other genres. The thesis traces back the historical development of this genre in the Western literature as well as in the Turkish literature. The second chapter touches upon Füsun Akatlı's biography and literary analysis. The Third chapter analyses Akatlı's essays in terms of content and language and style. The content of Akatlı's essays is analysed in terms of culture, language and thought. Culture- related essays treat educations, drema, music, " intellectual – artist " issues. Language-related essays emphasize improper uses of the Turkish language and is deteriorration and its corruption. Thought –related essays concenrate on politics, history, criticism and philosophy. As a philosopher , Akatlı reflects her background in her essays displaying a questioning / critically thinking style. Her language is unpretentious, unaffected and clear.
