Abstract (EN)

This study aims to examine the emergence, development processes and social impacts of Community Centers and Community Rooms, which aimed at the cultural, social and educational development of the people in the founding years of the Republic of Turkey. These institutions, which took shape in line with populism, one of the fundamental principles of the Republican ideology, have been important tools especially for increasing the literacy rate, developing civic awareness and disseminating modernization goals. In this direction, Community Centers were established in 1932 and spread throughout the country in a short time; then, after they were closed in the early 1950s, they were replaced by Community Rooms that operated on a more local and limited scale. In this study, firstly, the ideological and structural foundations of Community Centers are addressed, and then the areas of activity of these institutions – such as publishing, theater, courses, exhibitions, language studies – are analyzed in detail. How and why Community Centers were established, their differences from Community Centers, their functions in rural areas, and the transformation process they went through especially during the Democrat Party period are also comprehensively evaluated. In the second section, the effects of these institutions on society are discussed; women's participation in the public sphere, their roles in secularism and nation-state construction, and various criticisms are evaluated. The third and fourth sections of the study are specifically devoted to the Gaziantep Community Center and Community Rooms. The types of activities carried out by these institutions at the local level, their relations with the city, and their social contributions are evaluated through the example of Gaziantep. The activities of the Community Center such as representation, language-literature, fine arts, sports, social affairs, village life, museums, courses, and libraries are examined in detail. The similarities and differences with the general structure of Community Centers are also revealed through this local example. In conclusion, this study provides a comprehensive assessment of the place of Community Centers and Community Rooms in the history of the Republic and their importance in terms of cultural heritage; it examines the functions undertaken by these institutions in the social transformation process of modern Turkey within a human and historical framework. The micro-historical approach specific to Gaziantep contributes to the understanding of the subject in the local context. Keywords: Community Centers, Community Rooms, Gaziantep Community Center.
