Abstract (EN)
TAYŞİ, S. The Determination of the Nutritional Status and the Food Consumption Amounts Containing E-110 (Sunset Yellow) Additive among Children of 3-18 Age Group with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder in Gaziantep Province. Hasan Kalyoncu University Health Sciences Institute Nutrition and Dietetics Program, Graduate Thesis, Gaziantep, 2018 This study was carried out to determine the nutritional status of children with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), to investigate their consumption of foods containing E-110 Sunset Yellow, and to determine parents' attitudes towards food additives. A total of 130 children aged 3-18 diagnosed with ADHD included in the study. The research was conducted in a public hospital in the province of Gaziantep. The children's anthropometric measurements were taken and body mass indexes (BMI) were calculated. In order to evaluate the nutritional status and to determine the consumption amount of the E-110 additive in the packaged consumed foods, the 24-hour food consumption record was taken, and the energy and nutrient intake quantities were determined using the Nutritional Information System (BEBIS) program. As to daily E-110 amounts were calculated by considering the consumption amounts of foods including E-110 and the highest E-110 amounts allowed to be added to the foods in Turkish Food Codex. Amongst the children, 9.2% were underweight , 50.8% were normal, 18.5% were obese, 13.0% were overweight. It has been found that all age group children met adequate protein requirements. In all age groups, the consumption of fiber, potassium and calcium were inadequate, and the received amounts were 51.6%-60.6%, 34.7%-54.3%, and 39.9%-88.6%, respectively. While three-year-olds met the iron requirements, age group 4-6 years met 77.3%, age group 7-9 years met 96.0%, age group 10-13 years met 98.8% for boys and 72.9% for girls, and boys met 104.5% and girls met 56.0% for age group 14-18 years. As for energy requirement, three-years-olds met 102.6%, age group 7-9 years met 87.5%, age group 10-13 years met 68.1% for boys and 66.7% for girls, and age group 14-18 years met 62.4% for boys and 76.5% for girls. While girls aged 14-18 met 91.7% of the vitamin C requirement, the rest of the groups met the requirement in its entirety. Amongst the families, 58.8% thought that the consumption of coloring food additives affects ADHD. Moreover, 27.0% of the families reported that they received ADHD-related nutrition information and 22.8% reported that they received this information from a dietician. The average amount of E 110 (Sunset Yellow) consumption in children with ADHD is between 0.0033 – 0.021 mg/kg. This amount of consumption does not exceed the acceptable daily intake (ADI: 0-4mg/kg/day). The families and children should be educated for the information on labels of packaged foods, should reduce the consumption of foods containing artificial colorants that are affecting ADHD and maintain adequate and balanced nutrition. Keys Words: Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Nutrient, Sunset Yellow (E-110)
