Comparison of Ghazāli's Tehāfut al-Falāsifah and Giles of Rome's Errores Philosophorum in scope and style

Abstract (EN)

In this study, it is planned to evaluate Ghazāli's work called Tahāfut al-Falāsifah which is considered the most important and influential criticism of philosophy in the Islamic tradition, and Errores Philosophorum, which can be considered a critics of philosophy in the Latin West, by subjecting it to a comparative reading. In this way, in order to reveal which works are in circulation in the Latin West, which owes a lot to Islamic philosophy, and how important they are, in the first chapter, we will examine Giles' world and in this context, the little renaissance and twelfth century translation activities, universities, and also perception of Ghazāli in 13th century Europe. In the second chapter, Giles' life and his works and the philosophical thought of Giles including his classification of sciences, metaphysics and psychology will be examine. This is important in terms of determining the general framework of his thought and the sources he was influenced by. Thus, in the last chapter, which is also the title of this thesis, it will be possible to compare the thought of Ghazāli and the philosophy of Giles of Rome. Their resource use, style and motivations will be tried to be determined. Finally, a mutual evaluation of the two works will be tried to reveal their common and different aspects.
